U.S. CIVIL WAR — ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN TELEGRAMS REPORTING LEE’s SURRENDER TO GRANT & capture of Mobile, Ala.Telegram #1 is dated April 9, 1865 at noon. It states: “General Lee and his army surrendered to Gel. grant this morning. Terms proposed by Grant accepted by Lee are substantially that the private [?] soldiers of Confederacy are paroled and return to their homes — the officers to remain until delt [sic] with by the government[.] Correspondence between Grant and Lee are reported [?] for publication.”
Telegram #2 is dated April 7 [1865] at 10:40 pm. It states: “Mobile taken, six thousand 6000s [?] prisoners captured.”
Old envelope states: “Original Despatches / Surrender of Lee / Capture of Mobile”
Condition is as shown. Some staining from being stored in an adhesive ribbed binder (from which they were later removed without damage). Some edge wear. Suitable for framing.
