    Shiloh Battlefield Civil War Letter 29th Indiana Infantry.
    This letter is written by Harvey Grable of the 29th Indiana infantry from Pittsburg Landing Tennessee on April 15, 1862 just after the battle of Shiloh. The letter is clear and dark ink, Harvey spells the way the word sounds.
    He first writes that he is well, they had marched for 7 days right along and last day they was ordered on a force march and they slung our knap sacks. They marched 125 miles the week before last. They marched all night Sunday night and Monday and went wright into battle. They marched to savanna to the Tennessee river. They came up on the steam boat ten miles and went into the battlefield, they fought all day Sunday and Monday we reinforced them about fore o’clock. Sunday they maid our men retreat about one mild. They ? us on a stand Monday tell about fore o’clock and then we made them retreat about 25 miles.
    People tell me the rebels can’t fight, they can fight just as well as we can. It is an offell sight to go over the battle wright after a battle and sea the ded men and wounded men the battle feld is eight miles squere and it would avery (average) a man every to feat square. The resen the rebels had so meny mes they had eight days solyers for this battle they giv them ? dollars for eight days old Burigard told them that if thay ? this battle he would raqest 15 dollars a month .
    Thay was twelve of our company wounded i wasend hurt. This morning with a man that is hear to sea the battle grond his name is teynarder he wil take avfur av ?? ( this part hard to read , dark ink but spelling bad.) he is sending something to logansport( maybe a reporter?? )
