In September 1861, when federal troops were operating in (West) Virginia, Union General William S Rosecrans moved against Confederate General John B. Floyd which resulted in the Battle of Carnifex Ferry.  The newly-formed 1st Virginia (Loyal) Union Cavalry was ordered to concentrate at Clarksburg, Virginia, in order to help secure a stronghold in western Virginia.  The battle resulted in a strategic Union victory and, two years later, West Virginia was formed.
Rare early war-date "American Telegraph Company" telegram, partly-printed, oblong 1 page, 5 ¼ x 8 ¼, in which Col. Henry Anisanell, 1st Virginia Cavalry (Union) concentrates his forces as per General William S. Rosecrans orders, "received at," Parkersburg, (West) Va., [Sept.] 14, 1861, "telegraph from, Wheeling, Va. To Captain Isaiah Hill of Co. C, 1st Virginia Cavalry, "reading, in part: "Have your tent…report immediately your company to Clarksburg by order of Genl. Rosecrans. H. Anasler [Henry Anisanel], Col. 1st Va. Cav."
