Absolutely an original item, not a reproduction.  This item is a "handstamp paid" in philatelic terms--to denote an envelope without stamps but with the postage pre-paid during the period before stamps were issued in October 1861 but after June 1, 1861--a Confederate States of America item of "Postal History" to be more precise.
You are purchasing both the postal envelope and the original letter.
A red "ORANGE Va. June 25" with "PAID" and a manuscript "5" addressed to "A(rthur) R. Blakely, Esq., (Member of State Convention), Richmond, Va."  Items addressed to delegates at the Virginia State Constitutional Convention in Richmond while debate of the Confederate Constitution was happening are scarce and very desirable.  The sender dropped this letter off at the post office after hours with the notation in the lower left "Charge A. G. Grinneau" to mean that the postage would be deducted from a depository account.
There is some internal separation on the file folds of the letter.  The writer - L. C. Vass - is apparently a house guest of Andrew Grinneau and directs that responses go to him care of A. G. Grinneau.  The writer is preying upon Mr. Blakely to help him obtain a new lens for his eyeglasses from a Richmond optometrist.  He is very specific with what he needs from a Richmond optometrist who will make a new lens and put it in the case.  The content is interesting, but not political.
Some staining and toning at left, noticeable on reverse.  The rear flap is missing.
