There is an excellent, and very detailed, article on Ma's Catalogue at the website of Wikipedia. It was originally issued in 1947 and was based largely upon handwritten manuscripts prepared by Chinese philatelist Ma Zung-Sung (1872 - 1945). The printed first editions (in Chinese and English) were completed by his son Ma Ren-Chuen (1908 - 1988). Late in life, Ma Ren-Chuen set about completing what would become the "Revised and Supplemented 1988 Edition" (sometimes called the "Second Edition") of Ma's Catalogue. According to the Preface, the 1988 Edition expanded upon the original in the following ways:
-inclusion of Republic of China issues through the Silver Yuan issues of 1949
-addition of Military Post and Stamp Booklet issues
-expanded listing of issues under the influence of foreign invaders to include Manzhouguo (Manchukou)
-inclusion of much new date and quantity issued information
-increase in the number of illustrations to over 1100
-addition of a Table of Contents (see photos 9 & 10 of this listing)
Although Ma Ren-Chuen had largely completed the Chinese version of the new edition by 1983, he encountered resistance to the actual publication from the Chinese authorities, on account of his inclusion of commemorative stamps issued by the Republic of China (i.e. the Chinese Nationalists of Chiang Kai-Shek) in the last years before that government departed the mainland. In addition, in 1987, while still working on the English translations, Ma Ren-Chuen was diagnosed with lung cancer. Fearing that treatment side effects would render him unable to continue, he postponed surgery and repeatedly eloped from the hospital to work at his home on the book. He did manage to complete the task but died just weeks before the final publication of the Chinese and the English editions.
