    EARLY STEAM PACKETS
The first steamship recorded to have
been used in the Mail Service is the
    "Lighting" built in 1821 which
    ran between Holyhead and Dublin.
    Soon after, steam packet services
    were established to Calais, Ostend,
    Hamburg and Gothenburg, and later
    were introduced on the Portuguese,
    Mediterranean and Trans - Atlantic
    routes. The steamship Sirius left
England for America on the 31st
March, 1838. and carried a ship letter
mail consisting of over three hundred
letters and fifty or so newspapers
As soon as the public realized the
    practicability of the new steam
    vessels the mails rapidly increased
    in bulk.
