Civil War letter dated Dec 30, 1861 from Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Ct Vols Sherman Division
Seth W. Hotchkiss 7th Reg Company A was from Meriden Ct and was mustered in on Sept 5, 1861
Letter is 4 pages long and is written from Tybee Island Georgia
He describes the planned assualt on the Confederate Fort Pulaski

At this time we are fixing for another conflict with the Devils Old Fort Pulaski is doomed to come under soon
We are nearly ready to begin and I suppoes they are waiting for us to come
Our pickets and the Rebel pickets are in rifle shot of one another
Fired a shell from the fort yesterday and killed one of our men belonging to the 46th New York Reg
We mounted a large number of heavy guns to tell on the fort. Some were so mighty that we had to mount them
at night unseen so near we could hear the guards talk around the fort
We were still as the grave, not a whisper from one of us 3-1/2 hours 200 of us worked under
cover of night witihin speaking distance of the cusses. If they had known it cast iron would been
plenty around us
A deserter came from the fort the other day and is with us now he says there are 500 men in the fort 42 guns
They have the top of the fort covered with logs painted black to imitate cannons
We can see with a glass their heaviest guns are 2 24 pounders our lightest are 32 pounders and parrot guns
at that we will play with them. They have fired at our entrenchments and never reached us within 3/4 of a mile
This man says they have fired their best guns with 3lbs extra powder besides the regular charge

Very warn here days, cold nights, bad water, bad living, plenty of flies, lice, musquetoes, rattle snakes

conducted a 112-day siege, then captured the Confederate-held Fort Pulaski Measures 8" x 10" and then folded to make 4 pages
