Description

This document, addressed to the commissioners of Perry County, Alabama, lists over forty men from the area surrounding Plantersville that were then—in February 1862—serving in various Alabama infantry companies. Most of units are referred to by their colorful militia names, including the Magnolia Cadets (Co. C, 4th Alabama); the Cahaba Valley Boys (Co. C, 10th Alabama); the Bibb Grays (Co. F, 11th Alabama); the Brooks Light Infantry (Co. A, 20th Alabama); the Phoenix Reds (Co. B, 20th Alabama); and the Bibb Rifles (Co. D, 29th Alabama). Men from Co. G, 4th Alabama and Co. A, 8th Alabama are also on the list. It was written by local planter Thomas S. Driskell and in it he notes that two of the men had families in need, and that one of the wives said “if she can get something to eat she can make clothing. per mo. she thinks will [be] sufficient for her.” The document was written on four pages of an 8” x 12” bifolium sheet of lined paper. It’s in excellent condition with light foxing and toning. Creased at the original mailing folds.
To the Hon. Commissioners court of Perry County, annexed I hand you a list of the volunteers from Plantersville Precinct in the Confederate services, the companies, Regiments, &c which they are in so far as I have been able to ascertain. You will also see that some of them lived near the line of the precinct, but in the adjoining counties. I thought proper to [include] them as probably they will not be reported elsewhere.
I find the indigent families of this precinct of absent volunteers to be two. Joseph Harrod's family to consist of his wife, a daughter sixteen years, one four years, and a boy two years old. She says if she can get something to eat she can make clothing. per mo. she thinks will [be] sufficient for her. Thos. Jackson left a wife, a daughter 2 years old, and a boy 3 mo. old. Harrod & Jackson both went from Bibb County near the line of this precinct, but their families are now in this precinct.
I have so designated those who live in the adjoining counties that you will easily perceive which they are, which is respectfully submitted to your inspection.
