    Description

    Civil War Document
Civil War Soldier pass to cross the river from Washington D. C. Over into Virginia where many Union troops were encamped in January 1862. These people were probably either friends not in the service or relatives of a soldier encamped there.
The document was signed by Porter’s Aide-de-Camp, Calvin D. Mehaffey.
Calvin D. Mehaffey entered the regular army as 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Infantry. The well-educated son of a prominent and politically progressive family from Lancaster, Pa., Mehaffey was valued by his superiors for his organizational skills, and only two weeks after enlisting, was called upon to serve on the staff of the new Provost Marshal of Washington, D.C., Andrew Porter. Mehaffey carried out the task of issuing military passes for the District, until March, 1862, when he was finally able to get out into the field.
The document measures 7 1/4 inches by 6 inches and is dated January 1862 - Headquarters City Guard, Provost Marshal's Office.  It grants the named people persmission to cross any bridge or ferry from Washington DC into Virginia.
