    Description

Civil War History Cover & 1866 Letters, Gen. Patrick to Gen. G.H. Sharpe, Maddox Tobacco Plot.
Both letters refer to the Tobacco Plot by Maddox in 1865.
The 1st letter was written by General Patrick to General George H. Sharpe and refers to the purchase of
tobacco, rosin, and turpentine by Mr. Maddox.
The 2nd letter was written by Adam Badeau to Gen. Sharpe on Head-Quarters Armies of the United States notepaper, mentioning that General Roberts captured the tobacco.
This purchase of tobacco, rosin & turpentine, was s
ubsequently made void by the USA because Maddox
did not own the actual products at the time he was granted the certificate to sell them. Maddox and friends
expected to procure them in Richmond,VA in the months of January or February, 1865. The sale came about, but the products were subsequently either burned by our military forces, appropriated by them to the use of the United States, or destroyed in the fires in Richmond at the time of capture in April, 1865.
Maddox then sued the United States: Maddox v. United States, 82 U.S. 58, filed December 16, 1872.
