Civil War Era Letter from England to Philadelphia April 10 1861 -  Fort Sumter!
This letter is related to other letters we received from the same estate. We have letters from Benjamin D. Coley's, a Captain for the New Jersey Volunteers during the Civil War. Most of the letters were addressed to his sister Elizabeth Gudgeon (sp?) on Cherry Street in Philadelphia, PA and this letter is addressed to a Thomas Gugeon (sp?) on Market Street in Philadelphia, PA.
However, this letter is from Odell which is a village in Bedford, England. The letter is dated April 10, 1861 which ironically enough is the date that kicked off the Civil War when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. written to "My dear son Thomas" who according to the envelope, lived on Market Street in Philadelphia, PA. The envelope has a stamp on the back that it arrived in Dublin on April 11, 1861 on its way to Philadelphia.
Based on our research, we are assuming that Thomas Gudgeon was the eventual husband of Captain Benjamin D. Coley's sister Elizabeth, which would explain why this letter was included with the other Civil War letters.

Letter Summary:
The mother and dad write to her son about receiving his letter a fortnight ago and overcoming an illness. Thomas' mother continues to give updates on Thomas' brothers and sisters working new jobs, having kids, getting work, and moving to new homes. The back page of the letter is difficult to read considering that there is writing along the side of it that covers some of the writing. It appears that his mother wrote that part later to add in an anecdote about the health of the family without the father knowing.
Condition: This letter is very delicate and is being sold as is. The letter has been separated by wear and tear on the folded creases of the letters. To restore this letter for framing, one would need to repair it. The ink has not faded much but there is writing on the back of the letter that covers some of the back text. Please see photos as they are an extension of our written description.
