    Description

CIVIL WAR AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED: Union Navy Rear Admiral Franklin Cogswell Prindle - December 5, 1862 - Aboard US Gun Boat Ottawa in Stone River, South Carolina
CIVIL WAR AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED.  This letter was written by Union Navy
    Rear Admiral Franklin Cogswell Prindle
aboard the Unadilla-class or “ninety-day” US Gun Boat Ottawa on December 5, 1862 in Stone River, South Carolina.
The letter was written to W. H. Young of Troy, NY.
At the time, Prindle was Third Assistant Engineer on the Ottawa which was fitted out at the Novelty Iron Works in New York.
The letter discusses his return to “our old station in the Stone” and how things seem quiet “though if you could spare us about 25,000 men and a couple of monitors I would not answer for the safety of Charleston a great while”.
He was supposed to be stationed in the Gulf, but the plan changed and he went from New York to Port Royal instead.
The boat engaged in “blockading” for a week when a gale forced them to put out to sea, where one engine failed and the ship drifted helplessly for two days.
They later patrolled up river to observe Charleston and Secessionville (South Carolina).
The letter includes these accounts of events:
“Tis said however that they are still at work building batteries ... to more strongly defend the City against the Yankee vandals” and “I believe two steamers and three schooners have been captured off Charleston lately (one of the latter having half a dozen Charleston pilots on board, bound for Nassau to get the Charleston trade)”.
The letter is 4 handwritten pages on one single sheet of paper folded to a size of 7.75" x 9.5".   There is additional writing on the last page in pencil which appear to be notes from a meeting.  It is unknown who authored these notes, but they appear to be by Mr. Young (see photo 4).  There is some bleeding of the ink on the last page (see photo 5).  The letter is in average condition for its age (see photos).  Shipping through FedEx in the continental United States only.  Will combine shipping for multiple purchases.
