Description:
Manuscript, 3 pp recto and verso, legal folio (conjoining leaves), n.p., c.1861, written largely in code, with original transmittal envelope addressed Filbert, Co. B, Pottsville, PA (postmark date illegible), containing directions for the formation of the battalion, mild toning and creasing, otherwise framed to 26¼ x 28 inches.
Peter Filbert served as Captain of Co B of the 96th Pennsylvania Infantry from August 1861 through December 1862 (but was promoted to Lt. This letter seems to detail the formation of the battalion into columns, lines and flanks, and contains instructions for various officers from the Colonel penciled note at the upper margin instructs the reader to pay special attention to the information contained within parentheses.
PLEASE NOTE: Although the engraved plaque for this item says 'WWI The Great War,' this was a mistake by the engraver that was never undoubtedly a Civil War piece.
