Harry Red Miller was a four year starter and
the 1908 Captain and
star halfback for Notre Dame. The 1908 team outscored their opponents 326-20 with an 8-1 record, losing only to Michigan.
In 1909 Miller was an All-American and played a key role in the upset victory over Fielding Yost's mighty Michigan
Wolverines.
Harry Red Miller was the biggest star of that game and Notre Dame vs. Michigan was elevated to a rivalry after this game. It is said that the press began calling the Notre Dame football team "The Fighting Irish" after this game.
What makes this item extra special On the back of the check you see that KK Rockne is stamped as a representative of the Notre Dame Football Ticket committee. This is a very rare piece of Notre Dame / Rockne history.
Red Miller was the oldest of five brothers to play at Notre Dame, including
one of the Four Horsemen, Hall of Famer Don Miller. Red Miller is also the father of Creighton Miller, another College Football Hall of Famer, from Notre Dame. This check is from Red Miller's personal account, dated Aug. 15, 1930.
