    Description

    Civil War soldier's letter, 1 pg., approx. 7-1/2" x 9-3/4", dated at
    Fort Burnham, Dec. 2, 1864
, from a Union soldier to his brother.
    Fort Burnham
, was the former Confederate Fort Harrison, part of the defenses of Richmond, which was captured by soldiers from Gen. Butler's Army of the James on Sept. 28, 1864 in the Battle of Chaffin's. The fort was renamed Fort Burnham in honor of Brig. Gen. Hiram Burnham, who was killed in the assault.
    This is a
    partial letter
, being the first page of a longer letter, and is written on the blank reverse of the soldier's brother's letter to him, which he refers to in his letter.
Good content, writing of their brother William being a prisoner, and noting that "a good many died of our boys".
    Includes (spelling corrected):
    "My Dear Brother,
Yours dated the 19th of Nov. I received the 27th Nov. and I was very glad to hear from you and to hear that you are all well, except your wife, and I hope until this reaches you she may be all right again. I am well at present, but it is very cold here just now and we aren't in no winter quarters yet, but we are at putting them up now as fast as we can, for it looks like if we would have snow soon...
...I can tell you something that will interest you a great deal and all the rest of my Brothers and Sisters & his wife, that is, I heard from Brother William last evening. He is well yet, but still a Prisoner. There was a young man came back and he wrote a letter to our company. But there are a good many died of our boys, but Billy stood it well, so he says. You tell his wife all about this and don't forget, for this is the first time that I heard from William since he is taken..."
    Fine.
