Description

An interesting 1862 letter from Hobart Berrian of the U.S. Treasury Department to Major William W. Russell, Paymaster of the U.S. Marine Corps. The letter, which is partially printed and partially handwritten on Treasury Department stationery, states “The allotment granted by the following person has been discontinued, and the amount paid upon it is places opposite the grantor’s name: John Howard Marine - ‘J. P. Jackson’-None-.” It is signed at the bottom by Berrian. Briefly docketed on reverse. It measures about 8” x 9 3/4” and is in very good condition with light foxing and toning. Creased where originally folded.
