Description
Fine letter from Civil War soldier Henry Hoyt, a member of the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery.
Writing from the Carver US General Hospital in Washington DC, to his brother William back home in
New Milford CT on Sept 11, 1864. Several war references to his daily life, and
apparently, he is in the hospital with a bowel issue. He does mention his siblings Sarah and George.
He also describes a disturbing seen as a member of his company named "Joseph Loveridge"
being in poor condition and he does not expect him to live long. He mentions Joseph's parents have come to the hospital in an attempt to take him home.
Sadly, Joseph died the following day (only 17 years old) in the hospital
from chronic diarrhea.
Henry Hoyt was a longtime resident of New Milford CT, and later moved to Poughkeepsie NY, after the war.
I have added some research items for your review, concerning Hoyt and Loveridge.
These items are not included with the sale of the letter, but the buyer is welcome to print them.
You will notice on Loveridge's grave marker, that it states he is was in the 1st CT Heavy Artillery,
but all research indicates he was in the 1st CT HA as a member of Company H with Hoyt (see the images).

The letter is two pages long and in good condition for it's age, and the original mailing cover is included.
There is a tear on the left border but does not really detract from the content.
Also the ink is fairly light and a little difficult to read in some places, however I was
able to decipher about 98% of the content and have transcribed below.
I was able to darken the letter with PHOTOS software and have added the dark images as a comparison.

Dear Brother
I have delayed writing home longer than I should had I not expected my furlough before this. I have waited as patiently as I possibly could but it has not come yet. I fear it will not. It was put in a week ago last Wednesday but whether it has gone any further than Hd Qrs here or not I do not know. I heard it had + then I heard it had not. There has not been any furloughs come here in some time.
We had examination a week ago but I was not sent off + since, they have been transferred some but none to our State yet + if they were they would not be likely to take me for I am getting so well. If I do not get this furlough I shall not expect to get one at present. I am feeling very well now. My bowels are not quite regular yet. I never saw such work as I have in getting a furlough. Mr Curtis Loveridge + wife are here. Came down last Tuesday to see Joseph. They have been trying ever since to get his furlough so as to take him home with them. Mr. L has been down to see the State agent + he thinks he will get it about tomorrow. But Joseph has failed so fast I don’t think they will ever get home alive. I should not be surprised if he did not live the day out. I thought when they first come they would get him home with them. He is very poor. Nothing left of him. He never was fit to come in the army. They feel quite badly. I have not heard from home in quite a while. Just one

year from today if I live my three years of service will expire. Think you will be a happy day! I hope the war will end before that. We have had some good news of late. The President has recommended to day for the people to thank “The Ruler of Patrons” for such victories + I trust he will ??? good time give us the final victory of all. And it is our prayer that it may speedily come if it be His will. I was down to see Henry last week + we went down to his home as he calls it (Mr. Roberts) + stayed all night. Had a first rate visit.
Had everything good to eat.
Warm biscuit butter honey + c. It tasted good. When I came away in the morning, Mrs. R filled my pockets full of apples + peaches. She is a good woman. I rode up to Washington with Mr. R. He was coming up after some friends. There was a young lady there from Brooklyn! I had a letter from Captain last week. They were near Berry ville. He was well. Have had some rainy weather of late.
Showery to day. Tell mother to keep up good courage if I do not come home now. Perhaps I will next winter. I don’t want her to fuss every day for me for she may get disappointed. I took this piece of paper for I am about out. I suppose Sarah is in NY now for Ed wrote me he was going after her. I must close this now + write to home. When you write direct to Carver Hospital Washington D.C. Do not put any co. or Regt on and I know it will come here. If you can’t write send an empty envelope. Most of your letters you have written since I have been here I guess all have been to the Regt first. My love to all I am very truly yours Henry.
