PLEASE REVIEW ALL OF THE IMAGES BELOW THIS DESCRIPTION
Original letter from soldier "Joseph S. Foreman" of Company "F" 126th Ohio Infantry Volunteers.
Writing to his wife on Nov 9, 1863 from Brandy Station VA.
A two page letter with fine civil war content, Foreman describes the 2nd Battle of Rappahannock Station, which occurred on Nov 7, 1863, two days before he wrote this letter.
The original cover is included and addressed to "Mrs. Nellie Foreman." Joseph was the son of Charles + Margaret Foreman, and married Eleanor Hardgrove, who I have noticed being referred to as "Nellie" and "Ellie."
The Foreman's lived in Carroll County Ohio for many years, however Joseph moved to Indiana many years later.
The letter is in VG condition and fairly easy to read once you become accustom to Joseph's writing style and spelling.
The ink has faded somewhat, but I was able to darken the images for this listing,
The patriotic cover has a fine image of President Lincoln.
I have transcribed the letter below and was able to decipher about 90% of the content.
As for Joseph Foreman's service record he enlisted on 8/15/1862, was wounded at Flint Hill on 9.21.1864, and discharged as a corporal by surgeon's certificate on 9.15.1865. (see images below).
Also, please review some of the research materials I uncovered for Joseph Foreman. These are NOT included with the sale of this letter, but the buyer is welcome to print them.

Dear wife. I take the opportunity + try to write a few lines to let you know where I am and what I am doing. I am very good health at this time and I trust that when this reaches you it will find you and all the rest in good health. I received a letter from you yesterday while on the march and was very glad to hear from you and to hear that you were so well and getting along so well. You will see by the heading of this letter that we have again changed quarters about midnight and the night before the 7
    th
to march the next morning the 7
    th
. Accordingly we started for Kellys Ford on the Rappahannock River where we arrived about 3 ock. After a very hard march when the 1
    st
Division commenced to cross when the enemy fired on them. We then opened on them with two batteries and then our troops charged them and took about 300 ?? prisoners and a lot of cattle. The loss in killed and wounded is ?? on our side but I can’t tell what it is yet. ?? as few of the ??

and a few of the wounded but not many. We lay on the battlefield that night and the next morning started for Brandy Station. We had several skirmishes with the enemy they taking possession of ?Corry Hill to shell us. The 3
    rd
Brigade of this Division skirmishes all day with the enemy. We got to Brandy Station about 3 ock and then was sent on pickets where we are still is a very large woods where only 12 hours ago the rebels had possession of. The sixth corps crossed at ?Beverly from about 3 miles below us. They took 1200 prisoners and battery of artillery and a wagon train and a large lot of cattle.
Our loss there was more severe. I don’t know how far our forces intend to pursue the rebels. We took them completely by surprise. The prisoners say that they had orders to build winter quarters the day before we attacked them but I think they will have to go farther south before they think of going into quarters. It is quite cool today it has snowed a little today the first I have seen this fall. I received a letter from Washington a few days ago they were all well there then. I think that I have told you all the news account here at this time. (A.L. Scfrato??? to ?? ????????) folks they are right. I don’t know when I will get this letter out but will send it as soon as possible. I will quit for this time. May God bless you and keep you safe is my prayer ???? I wrote a letter to you the day before I left. Give my love to all the Foremans and believe me as ever yours! till death. JS Foreman to Nellie A. Foreman
